You vs. My Boyfriend

You drive Chevrolet, my boyfriend does too
You like blue, my boyfriend does too
You don't like spicy food, my boyfriend does not too

You are athletic, so is my boyfriend
You are from the island, so is my boyfriend
You are Caribbean, so is my boyfriend

So, you or my boyfriend?

Waverly

Waverly,
I packed 4 years of memories
In a suitcase of two
This time I properly say goodbye
And hug my lovers too

Gone with the Fog

I just got off from a phone call with my cousin. They are in the church right now, getting ready for my grandmother's memorial service. She will buried today at noon, Jakarta's time. None of my relatives look sad anymore, but perhaps they have each other and they got to see my grandmother for the very last time. Meanwhile here, I have been pretty stressed out. My stomach was feeling really weird and all I wanted to do was eating. Memories of my grandmothers keep popping up in my vision. And it was so real since the night she passed away. Waverly was pretty foggy on Thursday and Friday evening. I happened to take a stroll around the bridge.

The fog just suddenly reminds me of her. Her peaceful and calm-self whom I used to see the morning I woke up and the night I went back from school or internship. Her thin grey her and how soft she speaks.

The fog is now how I will feel about my grandmother. You can see the fog, but you can't touch it. I can still see my grandmother in my vision, but I can't touch her anymore. Grandma, I will always remember you when the fog comes again.

I guess I don't have someone to blame anymore for giving me a name of "Setio Nastiti". A name that I thought was too Javanese and traditional. But that name will be name I carried for the rest of my life. A name that will be seen in newspapers and television. A name that I can proudly say now that "Eyang Uti name me Rut, Rut Setio Nastiti. Eyang, I love you so much. I wish we could see each other one more time.

A Memoir of My Grandmother's Death

I have never been deeply saddened by any death before. And this is mye first encounter of a death that is real and close to me.

I have been on Fall Break today so my schedule was pretty loose. Stree free-zone. When I woke up this morning, I saw my dad's chat on one of our family groups on WhatsApp. He said that my grandma (from my father's side) was hospitalized at 10am Central Time so it was 10PM WIB. He only said "Grandma is in the hospital. Please pray for her." I told my friend about it and we thought she will be fine. She had been hospitalized before because of her stroke. I was so sure that she would do just fine and will go back home the day after that.

Time passed by. It was 4pm and I was ready to go to work. I felt nothing strange. I was just doing my work. It was not until 6pm when my coworker told me that my phone was ringing. I told her "Oh, I think that's my alarm". I did not even feel like reaching out to the storage room. Eventually, I did.

I received a personal text from my dad.
" Your grandma is in the critical situation. Please pray for her,". I freaked out. After all, I never received any text from them telling me she is in a critical condition whenever she was in the hospital. I know at that very moment, it must be serious.

I left the childcare to Facetime my parents. Soon, the situation got worse. I did not want to cry but I did. Seeing my grandma from my phone screen struggling with an oxygen tube and a cardiac aid was not a pleasant moment. My dad kept telling me to pray. I know at the very moment, I just wanted to be around her via Facetime. So I told my co-workers I was leaving. Fortunately, there were not many kids.

I got back to my room and I just busted in tears. All my family members kept telling me to pray, so I did. I kept praying Out Father for 36 times. My mum told me that when you are really in need, that prayer will grant your wish. I kept praying. I was also trying to talk to my Grandma "Eyang, this is Rut. Your granddaughter who is now in the USA. Eyang, remember I'm going home this Christmas. Can you just stay a little bit longer?". I had a feeling that she could hear me. I could still see that her chest move upside down. I know she could hear me.

An hour has passed.  My mum told me to find the prayer for people who are facing their death. I found it and prayed it to her on the phone out loud. Just a couple more minute after that, my dad said "Literally, your grandmum has died. But we just had to follow the medical procedure. We are going to pray right now."

My dad led the prayer. I never heard him crying so blatantly like this before. There are only three times I have seen him crying. The first time was when his father passed away. He also cried when I was leaving home for the first time to go to Italy. And this time, is a cry like no other. He abruptly stopped in the middle of his prayer just to cry. I can imagine how crushed his heart is. Imagine, your mother, the person who gave birth to you, is now DEAD.

My feeling was so mixed. I was just crying and calling my mom. I was trying to blame something, someone, anything. But my mum said there was no point to do it now.
My grandma has passed away.

It was 7.15 when she was officially pronounced dead. I saw them taking of all the tubes from my phone screen. For a second I had thought that she suddenly moved her hands and woke up again. I remember there was a time I kept telling her to move her hands so the Doctor knows that she was not dead. But she did die . And she is dead. She has passed away.

Now it's time to pronounce to the world of social about my grandma's death. I was just crushed. But I felt like she deserve a moment of admiration. She deserve a spotlight on my Facebook what a wonderful grandma she was. The world need to know that my grandma was a character. So I did.

"My grandma is happily returned to and with the Lord today. She has stroke and had a breast cancer, but she had survived her cancer. Though she has been hospitalized several times, she lived her normal life. And last night, her stroke was attacking her again. She was tired this time. And God wanted her to be with Him and my grandpa. My grandma is a wonderful woman. She always prayed for her children, in-laws and her grand children. Though she was 81 and her vision is getting blur, she still read Bible every morning of her life. She still went to church whenever she felt that she could make it. She is a legend in the church. She let the people to use her house as a church. People from the church always say hi to her "Hello, Eyang. Happy Sunday? Apa kabar?".

We have lived with her for almost seven years. Though, I have been living abroad after our first year living with her. Whenever I went back to Italy or the U.S, I always whispered in her ears "Eyang, we'll see each other again next summer or next year." This summer I did not go home but I went home the summer before. We also thrown her a birthday party for her 80th birthday in July. There were around 300 people coming. Anyway, we always got to see each other over summer. Though, not the summer of 2014. I guess it was overdue. I wish I had whispered her again.

For the last seven years, we are just getting closer with our grandma. She is just a part of us. A part of my mom, dad, my brother and myself. We never forgot to buy her things she needed. Or if we went to eat out, we always bring a carry out for her. She loved to ear. She ate a lot too when we ate out with her. Whenever I was home, she always came to my room just to check. Or if I looked pretty and ready to go somewhere, she always asked where I was going. She always said "Ok. Take care" and watched me walking until I really left the door. The last message she told me was not to take dating seriously. I bet she knew I had a boyfriend. She cared. She really did. I will miss her presence and curiosity. Something I won't find when I'm home this Christmas. I already imagined that I will get to see her and as usual, and brought her gifts. But I guess my grandma was too tired and she could not longer wait for me to go home. Those are going to be good memories. A memory of me coming home only to tell my grandma that we were going to see each other again."

Rest in peace, Grandma. Mrs. Srimulatsih Sutomo. Eyang Uti. Eyang Srimulatsih. You will be always dearly missed. I know you are in a better place with Jesus now. He wanted to celebrate Christmas with you. He loves you too. You're going to meet Eyang Kakung soon. I will miss you. And I already am. As I am crying right now finishing this line. I am glad that you were not by yourself spending the rest of your life for the last seven years. You had mom, Steven, dad and mbak. I will see you when I see you. Please pray for me. I will make your proud me. I love you dearly, Eyang. Rest in Peace. (1933-2014)"

When I say I love you

When I say I love you...
It's my current conscious state on what I feel about you
My love for you is constantly changing

When I say I love you
It's because you make me feel loved at that time
My love for you is not the type of permanent love

When I say I love you
It's because I don't know if I can love you the day after tomorrow
My love for you is not an everlasting love.

I'm not in that stage yet when I feel someone deserve my genuine and unconditional love

My love to you is the cute type of love. The romantic type of love. Not the "marry me" and "forever" type of love.

Listen to this
I've said I love you before to men
I've said I love you to men and I know it was love.
I was feeling powerless, appreciated, inspired, respected, moved.

When I said I love you to you,
I did not feel those ways.

I don't know about this
I might have thought this was love

But when I said I love you
I might have meant it and
I might not mean my "I love you"

I never regretted that I said it
Love without meaning is just word

It just means "Please don't leave me alone. We've gone this far..."

This Guy

The guy who does not show any respect
The guy who is not responsible for his action
The guy who misbehaves
The guy who tells lies
The guy who comforts anyone with lies

The guy who has no feeling
The guy who hurts one's feelings
The guy who has no heart
The guy who plays with people's hearts
The guy who has no emotion
The guy who messes up one's emotion

The guy who thinks he is mature
The guy who is hiding everything like a child
The guy who needs to grow up into a man
The guy who needs to figure out what he really wants

The guy who is broken
The guy who needs to be mend
The guy who cannot be fixed

The guy who does not love himself
The guy who has never been loved before
The guy who needs to learn how to love
The guy who does not deserve to be loved

The guy who needs to apologize
The guy who takes a good girl for granted

The guy who was once meaningful
The guy who is insignificant

The guy who needs a miracle in his life
The guy who will change one day not anytime soon

The guy who came as a lesson
The guy who has been forgiven.

Dear Future Boyfriend

Can I be your girlfriend, please?
Because I really like you (at least for now I'm sure)
It is just nice when you like someone
who likes you back and he will spare a little bit of his time with you
Because
If you make me as your girlfriend
I am hoping that you would give at least 15 minutes every day or night just to hug me and give me goodnight kisses and tell me how your day went.
It just makes me feel calm if I know that your day went well and you still want to see me.
I also want to have a healthy lifestyle and not having my heartbeat pounding all the time whenever waiting what you are going to say next and what we are going to do next.
If you make me as your girlfriend I will not text you 24/7 like crazy bitch
Because I will put my trust on you.
I will also support and motivate you (but tell me if you don't need it or you want something else)
I will offer a hand if you could not reach your back because you feel itchy or you just want to be comforted
I will not ask you to cuddle or nap with me every night because that means I will accept you the way you are and I will let you be what you want to be.
My point is by doing this makes me happy and I'm not trying to hide anything and act like a child.
This is my proposal.
What do you think?

I Have a Thing For

dimples
intelligence
guys in uniform
basketball players
tall guys

That Guy

The guy who has not fully grown into a man
The guy who runs on track
The guy who has a passion for nano technology
The guy who goes to the gym
The guy who studies Biology
The guy who got my first appreciation letter
The guy who said he loves me on Valentine's Day
The guy who said I'm beautiful
The guy who can read my rhythm
The guy whom I celebrated my 21st birthday with
The guy who shares the same dreams with me
The guy with the blue eyes
The guy who held my hand around National Monument
The guy who marched on 4th of July
The guy who drives white truck
The guy from a subway in New York City
The guy from a club in DC
The guy who is a Republican
The guy who wanted my affection
The guy who dated me for popularity
The guy who knows I am shy
The guy who knows where to touch
The guy who made me believe the perfect guy exists
The guy who I met in Rome
The guy who was nervous
The guy who had a girlfriend when I was into him
The guy who plays guitar and sings
The guy who treats me like a sister
The guy who makes me feel stupid
The guy who brag too much about himself in one night
The guy who said likes my style
The guy who did and did not make plans with me
The guy who flirted on Twitter
The guy who is a good writer
The guy who speaks German
The guy who said I have nice wide shoulders
The guy whom I thought was my first love
The guy whom I spent the afternoon with under the Eiffel tower
The guy who tried too much to impress me
The guy who keeps me writing
The guy who really likes m
The guy who I loved and loved me
The guy who don't know I wrote about them

The guy I haven't met yet

Lucky are those guys who made it to this poem.

Do Not Date a Girl Who Writes

Do not date a writer. She has convinced herself that she is God. She will capture you between her two open palms and squeeze your diaphragm gently within her middle and index finger. She’ll laugh when you squirm, and tickle your bronchi. She’s read articles that have been telling her for weeks that being woken up at 5 AM by the girl who’s been digging nail marks into your shoulders for the past three weeks, might be a good thing. Because she has finally tasted language again and wants to tell you about it. Maybe she wants to ink it across your body. She might even want to write it on your shoulders with her tongue. Your protests will fall on deaf ears, she’s forgotten your name and where you met, she only remembers that she loves you because she has learned the sulk of your bottom lip.

Try mouthing words at her, she won’t listen ‘baby I have a 7 o’clock start. I’m tired.’ You’ll realise soon enough, if you stay, that time means nothing to her. The clocks have stopped. She’ll shush you quietly, or prise your mouth open and chew on the inside of your cheek or she’ll clamber out of bed on coltish legs to drink whiskey from a wine glass. The dimples on her knees will remind you of commas, but she will not always let you touch them. I’m exercising my right as a woman, she’ll say, when you want sex and she doesn’t feel it because she’s spent the weekend fucking poetic verse and her mouth is too tired to kiss you and her teeth are aching.

There’s trails of dust she’ll leave in her wake. The bed will be empty on Sunday mornings because she is sitting on the roof, smelling of alcohol and cigarettes and all the novels she’s slept with and the ink she’s bitten into. There will be curdled milk in the fridge, cheese three weeks off, and always cake. These days will be her worst. Her screams will fill your ears like lead if you try to touch her. She’ll turn her back on you and curl herself onto your favourite chair and spend hours there, watchful and irritable. She’ll leave you if you speak to her and there are days when you will wonder if she will ever come back, or if she has found another muse. Messages aren’t always read. And if they are, responses aren’t always found.

She’ll rip the skin of your back to pieces when she loves you again. The edges of your jaw will bear the three pronged ridges of her teeth. Her syntax will pour into your mouth like aged wine and she will use her body to curve herself around you like a vine and these will be the best and worst hours of your life.

You know her happiness is short lived. She will give you herself only when she wants to and then she will take it away. You do not own me, she’ll say, I own myself. I’m kept only by language. I’ll cheat on you with words. She has filled herself up already, and there is no room for you.

Do not date a writer. She thinks she is God.

The Best Advice An Indonesian Father Give to Her Daughter about Love

"It is ok makanya jangan naksir berat berteman dulu sampai cukup akrab. Writing tresno jalaran kulino. Rasa sayang itu karena sering berjumpa dan saling kenal, jadi kamu balik prosesnya: kenalan dulu dengan baik. Sedih sebentar saja, lalu ceria lagi, anggap saja kayak berdoa saja pilih sepatu, belum cocok nomornya, berdoa saja, nanti Tuhan yang sediakan buat kamu. Nanti di Jakarta kita diskusikan. Sekarang stay cool. Mengucap syukur, berarti Tuhan belum berkehendak. Tenang saja, Kak. Cheer up, jangan sedih."

You've Got Mail: We Are Here to Make a Contribution

Happy November everyone!
November is a very good month. It is the last month where we have a chance to finish and accomplish all the goals that we made at the beginning of 2012 before December 31st is coming! I love November because it is the month where hopefully once in a year I will be wiser, since my birthday is in November. I am turning 21 this November 11. Isn't exciting? I turned 21 years old in the United States. It must mean something.

This morning I received a very thoughtful email from my dad. He just sent it to me and my brother. Oh, my father also just turned 49 last Tuesday (10/30). His birthday is always a mark that my birthday is coming soon (my birthday is 12 days after his birthday).

The email is an article "We are here to Make a Contribution" by Rick Warren about what our purpose  in life is and how we can contribute. I think it would be really nice to share it with everyone since today is a new beginning of a new month, new day! Have a bless month all!

"It is God himself who has made us what we are and given us new lives from Christ Jesus; and long ages ago he planned that we should spend these lives in helping others." (Ephesians 2:10 LB)
God calls you to a service far beyond anything you could ever imagine. You were put on Earth to make a contribution. You weren’t created just to consume resources — to eat, breath, and take up space. God designed you to make a difference with your life. You were created to add to life on Earth, not just take from it. God wants you to give something back. The Bible says, “In our union with Christ Jesus he has created us for a life of good deeds, which he has already prepared for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10b TEV). These “good deeds” are your service to the world. Whenever you serve others in any way, you are actually serving God and fulfilling one of your purposes (Colossians 3:23-24; Matthew 25:34-45; Ephesians 6:7). What God told Jeremiah is also true for you: “Before I made you in your mother’s womb, I chose you. Before you were born, I set you apart for a special work" (Jeremiah 1:5a NCV). When most people think of this "special work," they think of pastors, priests, and professional clergy, but God says every member of his family is to minister. In the Bible, the words "servant" and "minister" are synonyms, as are service and ministry. If you are a Christian, you are a minister, and when you’re serving, you’re ministering. Have you ever wondered why God doesn’t just immediately take us to Heaven the moment we accept his grace? Why does he leave us in a fallen world? He leaves us here to fulfill his purposes. Once you are saved, God intends to use you for his goals. God has a ministry for you in his Church and a mission for you in the world.

Adobe Illustrator: Designs for Menu and Advertisment

These two designs below are my some of the first assignments we did for Graphic Design. We had to make a menu and an ad using Adobe Illustrator. I never knew how to use Adobe Illustrator before until I took this class.  I found the tools in Illustrator are more handy and specified. It is not like Photoshop which allows someone to do more of photo editing. In Illustrator, we could not use it for photo-editing.

The idea of the restaurant is an urban-setting European-fusion cafe. It has to look simple and chic. With the design of the menu, I could definitely see a very cozy monotone architecture with black and white as the colours that dominate the furniture.

The second design is to make an advertisement of an invented-company. As I love creating, designing, writing, my company is a designing company. The idea of the design was inspired by the design for a better life poster (it is on my two previous posts). My professor said it is s really good and attention-getter design. The message is clear.  "We design what you want". The second important thing that has to be appealing is the name of the company, which is ink and print. As we all know, as every company moves toward digital era, all we need is just the website address of the company and its motto -- right below the company name.  The services are the block on the left-top. It is the third message that is wanted to be delivered in the ad.

Using Illustrator is really easy, however there are so many different techniques that can be used for one particular object. It is the role of designer to practice and make themselves comfortable with different tools in Adobe Illustrator.

To Write is to Feel

My life in Waverly, IA, United States is about projects. Project is the term that I use to describe anything I do that is not school related and solely to fulfill my hobby. I have been thinking for such a long time to write a novel. My experience in Italy was more than enough for me to write about it. But I haven't got the big-push yet what to really write about. There were just so many things going on in that two years. There are too many people I met, too many people I like, too many good stories to share -- in a good way.  I do not know what would be the focus of that one. Based on novels I have read so far, in a good love novel, there are only two main characters, the lovers and other supporting characters the ex's lovers, their families and friends.

However though, recently after this summer, I think I got a really break-out inspiration to getting it going. And today, believe it or not, I already got 765 words for the novel. I love creative writing. Sometimes I wish I go to college to just study to be a writer. So that I can just focus on writing. The problem is I have to many interests and hobby and things I want to do in life. It is hard for me to focus now. But, at least I have started today.

This motivation came back again when three weeks ago, I remember what my Bahasa Indonesia teacher in SMA Santa Ursula, Pak Eko, told me that if I want to write a book I have to spend the time at 30 minutes to an hour to do that. And I think I have to start doing it. Plus, I already got a really good characters for the main part of the book.

I already get an abstract about the book.

"... But, I think you are a character yourself. I do not know whether we are going to meet again near in the future. And this is what makes it more exciting. I will develop my own story and so do you. I hope you are happy now, because I am."

It is basically the reason why this story came up. it is so much influenced by James Patterson's book Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas. And I think that is pretty exciting! Who does not love story about strangers, summer vacation, distance? I like those kind of stories. I want to thank my friend too, Dinda Sekar who keep asking me "Why not making an online novel, a book, a short story?" I told her, I have the a note-book that I sometimes write about. but I don't move it yet to an electronic version. I am getting excited.

Dream Jobs through Design

Couple months ago, I tumbled upon a really simple yet sophisticated website called R&D Research and Development. I found an eye-catching piece of art that says "A better life through good design". It is not just because it is written on a yellow paper, but the words really gather my attention that good design could make a better life.

We have seen many encouragement words that brings positivity. in posters, banners, and so on. For examples quotes that are put as wallpapers to encourage people to live their lives to the fullest.

example of design for a better day in life : don't look back!

Then, I came up with an idea of my favourite topic to talk about -- my future, especially my future career. Why not making a simple chic list to kind of keep ourselves on track, to remind us our goals, especially when it comes to dream jobs.

So, I came up with a really simple design that might help people to list what they really want to be in life. It is really simple. I am still using the contrast, repetiton, alignment and proximity principle from my Graphic Design class. Here are the designs: (black and white and pink). Feel free to have one for yourself!

Here are some tips how you can make the list:
1. To make your list more realistic , it is better to list the job that you can see yourself in 5-10 years from now. However, set your dream jobs high!
2. You can fill the list with any kind of jobs you have in mind (but remember, the kind of jobs that you wanted to have when you were a kid and now is not relevant to you major/minor are better opted out). For example, in junior high I wanted to be a doctor, but I realised I am not such a scientific person and afraid of blood. Therefore, I would not list "Doctor" as my dream job.
 3. For aesthetic matter, you might want to group the jobs according to
      - the nature of the job
      - length of the job (for example the longest would be on the top)
      - the hard-reach to easy-reach.
4. It would be nice to print one and keep this list on your desk, and it will make it a kind of motivator for you.

Feel free to get a copy of the list by just right-click and save as image.

Here is an example of the full list: (the order is based on the length of the words)

Hope everyone finds the list useful!

Behind Nastilicious

I have been thinking of changing my blog name from Nastilicious to Nash.Nastilicious is a name that I made up myself since I was in 7th grade of junior high school. I remember it was the Friendster period that I want to come up with a name for my album.

Nowadays, that "Nastilicious" name consists of so many conotations. A year or two ago, I Googled word, "Nastilicious" what I found out was Urban Dictionary defines it as  "Something that is horribly disgusting, but you love it anyway." I know I am lovable, but I am not horribly disgusting! :)

And that is not me at all, nasty (the other conottation that people usually associate it with).  The name of Nastilicious was actually a combination of my last name and the word "delicious" -- Nastiti + delicious = Nastilicious.I remember my headmaster in high school liked to call my last name with his Canadian accent that sound like "Rut Nasty-ti" -- something like that.

While Nash is a nickname of my last name - Nastiti. I wish my family name is NASH. Remember Nastiti is not my family name. In our family, we don't have family name. My father name is K. Hartadi, so if I would have a last name is Hartadi or his first name -- but I just don't. This is why I really want to have a last name like Nash! And Nash still sounds playful like Nastilicious too. It even has more energy and positivity -- good for long term branding.

So what do you guys think? Hit me with comments please!

Graphic Design: Audrey Hepburn and Her Words

These are the artworks of my favourite Audrey Hepburn's quotes. I call back a memory from highschool when two years ago a in the middle of our intense conversation about values, cultures and such, a good friend of mine said to me "Rut, you are so prudent". That time I did not know the meaning of prudent and she explained, "You just want to do everything in a very proper and right way, follow the rule, thinking what's ideal. I told her, "Oh, well. So there is nothing wrong about being prudent."

A year after that "prudent talk":, when I heard the word prudent, I always associated it with Audrey Hepburn. Hepburn is always is symbol of fashion, a lady, a humanitarian, happiness, and love. She is a prudent, too.

The design is simple. I tried to follow the basic principle of graphic design, the class I am taking now, which is CRAP principle. Wait, don't think I am not prudent. CRAP stands for contrast, rrepetition, alignment, and proximity. I realized that right-alignment is the most effective alignment, while centered sometimes makes readers more difficult to read. And the "Love, Audrey Hepburn" part is definitely repetition.

Back to Hepburn again. Many of you might not have known that she died from a sort of cancer. While October is the month of Breast Cancer Awareness, it is important to commemorate those who suffered or survive from cancer, especially Breast Cancer with positive attitudes, words, and encouragement. And all those positivity are shown from my favourite Hepburn's quotes.

Yes, Paris 2013. Montepellier is a good idea too!
